One-word story

Stand in a circle and tell a coherent story one word at a time.

7.9 trust impact 6–14 Medium energy 15 min

A whole circle co-creates a single story, contributing one word at a time. The exercise teaches deep listening — you have to release any idea you had for the next sentence and respond only to what was just said.

How to run it

  1. 1

Stand in a circle of 8–12.

  2. 2

Pick a story prompt: 'The day the office got a dog…'

  3. 3

Going round, each person adds one word. Punctuation is implied by tone.

  4. 4

When the story reaches a natural ending, applaud and start a new one with a new prompt.

  5. 5

    Run three rounds. Debrief.
