Lost at sea

Rank 15 items by survival value — first alone, then as a group.

A US Coast Guard exercise turned classic team game. Each person privately ranks 15 items they've salvaged from a sinking ship by their survival value. Then the team has to agree on a single ranking. The delta between individual and group accuracy is the lesson.

How to run it

  1. 1

Hand out the scenario sheet and the list of 15 items.

  2. 2

10 minutes silent — each person ranks alone.

  3. 3

20 minutes — the group must reach consensus on one ranking.

  4. 4

Reveal the Coast Guard's official answer. Score individual vs. group accuracy.

  5. 5

Debrief: did the group beat its average individual? Why or why not?
