Rose, thorn, bud

Three-word check-in that surfaces the real state of the room in five minutes.

9.0 trust impact 4–25 Low energy 5–15 min

Rose, thorn, bud is the check-in we use more than any other. A rose is something going well, a thorn is a frustration, a bud is something you're cautiously hopeful about. It's fast, structured, and gives quieter team members a script.

How to run it

  1. 1

Explain the three terms on one slide.

  2. 2

Give 60 seconds of silent thinking time.

  3. 3

Round-robin: each person shares their rose, thorn and bud in under 45 seconds.

  4. 4

Resist the urge to discuss in the moment. Capture the buds — they often become the agenda.

Facilitator tips

  • If a thorn is heavy, name it: 'Thank you for naming that — let's come back to it after the round.' Don't skip past it, don't derail.

Where this fits

Pair this with the right venue setting and a matching retreat format. If you want a fully facilitated version, our team can run it for you.
