'If you really knew me, you'd know…' is the deepest icebreaker we run. It is not for day one. It works on the second evening of a retreat, after meals together, after some shared frustration, when a team is ready to drop a layer.
How to run it
- 1
Frame the activity carefully. Make it explicitly opt-in.
- 2
Sit in a circle. One person speaks at a time, finishing the sentence: 'If you really knew me, you'd know…'
- 3
After they speak, the next person to their left goes — no comments, no thanks, no fixing.
- 4
After the round, hold 60 seconds of silence. Then close the circle.
Facilitator tips
- Never run this without an experienced facilitator in the room.
- Have a follow-up plan: a one-on-one channel for anyone who wants to talk further.
Where this fits
Pair this with the right venue setting and a matching retreat format. If you want a fully facilitated version, our team can run it for you.
